Our Wonderful Librarian!

Kathy Sekula is the current Librarian for the County Line Community Band. Her roots in community band go back to the earliest days of Ye Olde Village Band in Floresville, and the Village Band of Floresville. She was also privileged to play the second trumpet part in a local bass quintet known as Brass Tex. Later she became a charter member of the group that combined the Floresville band with an Atascosa County band to form the beginnings of the County Line Community Band. When she retired, Kathy wanted to play more music, so she joined the Beethoven Concert Band in San Antonio, for about five years. Her love of playing German, Czech and Polish music led her to pick up the baritone horn, which she currently plays in CLCB.

Born in San Antonio, Kathy started band in St. Gerard Elementary School’s very first year of having an elementary band program. She chose to play trumpet because it had only three buttons to learn. She moved to the Floresville area with her family in her freshman year of high school. Her Tiger Band director was the well-known “Uncle” Fritz Teltschik.

Although Kathy does not have any formal music training past high school, she has always enjoyed playing music. On hearing about a group of adults practicing band music in Floresville, she was delighted to dust off her old “pea-shooter” trumpet after 20+ years of inactivity. She received a lot of on-the-job training, especially with the Brass Tex quintet. In about 2002, she was asked by her church music director to play trumpet with the Spanish choir. That challenge led to some very interesting and fulfilling music learning experiences.

After high school, Kathy earned a B.A. degree from Incarnate Word College and a M.Ed. from Trinity University, both in San Antonio. She worked for 37 years as a teacher at Sacred Heart School Floresville, in North East I.S.D. San Antonio, in Victoria I.S.D. Victoria, and in Floresville I.S.D. She finished her career as an educational diagnostician in Floresville I.S.D. and Poth I.S.D. She is currently retired, but works as a volunteer church secretary two days a week. And then there’s the CLCB’s music library to keep her on her toes.
